Liverpool Players Are Getting Cocky

Amazing, huh? They're still one point behind and we still have a game in hand over them but Liverpool players are already gloating that they are better than Manchester United. According to Xabi Alonso, they'd deserve to win the title.

"Liverpool have demonstrated this season that they are superior to United in the two matches between the teams. Nobody could dispute that, but now it is a real race for the title."

"United are defending champions and I feel they will be more nervous. I feel we deserve to win it by the way we have already played this season, particularly in the big games."

OK, I accept that they have little experience in how you win league titles so here's a little hint: the team that get the most points win it. As easy as that. If it would be a matter of doing the double over United then Citeh would have wrapped up the league in February last season.

Overconfidence could still well end Liverpool's challenge: as their fans, their players are getting cocky after two good games. Bit premature, isn't it?

Funny how 58% of your lot think it is over, according to your poll, yet we are the arrogant ones... I also note the poll was 70% until 2 weeks ago. It is called pressure and it is getting to you.

Try reading the full interview. But that does not fit your partisan viewpoint. "We can win the Premier League. It is far more likely than a month ago when we were a lot of points behind," he told the Daily Star . "Liverpool have demonstrated this season that they are superior to United in the two matches between the teams. "Nobody could dispute that, but now it is a real race for the title. "It is not impossible to imagine that we could win all of our next eight matches while United lose two. "But we know that we need to remain calm and to play without any real pressure or fear. "United know what it is like to play under pressure, but they have shown there are some cracks in the last two games, and we will be ready to pounce. "Every game is going to be vital from now on." Alonso concedes Liverpool must win their remaining eight league games in order to have a realistic chance of the title. "In our dressing room we are trying to remain calm. We know we need to take 24 points from a possible 24 so we need to be ice-cool about it. That is our challenge," he added. "Mentally we are prepared to fight for the league and Champions League. "United are defending champions and I feel they will be more nervous. "It could be a very emotional end to the season for us and after such a long time to win the league would be fantastic. "I feel we deserve it by the way we have already played this season, particularly in the big games."

Selective quotes on Vital Surrey? Never. Liverpool are talking a good game just like United and any other team chasing the title do, it's all part of the game. Honestly, and you're saying Pool are wet behind the ears when it coems to title races?

Of course Rooney and Ferdinand's statements about 'ending' Liverpool's title bid before the game at Old Trafford were just the height of humility then were they?

Of course the Lpool players are coock..they just CRUSHED you in your own back yard and you didnt have the capaility in your squad to stop it. Why should they be scared of a team they humiliated with ease in your own back yard?

It is not the big games that win you titles, it is the 'smaller ones'. Arsenal had a terrific record against the big four a couple of years ago, yet we won the title cos we beat most of the other teams, and Arsenal didn't. We've had every inch of complacency knocked out of us - that's what can cost you. They say we are going through a bad run, and Liverpool are brilliant. Short memories - Man utd were on an 11 match winning run, and had hardly conceded. Liverpool had dropped points all over the place, and only the game before had lost to Middlesbrough. But we forget. Fact is, if United had lost twice in that run, no one would have blinked an eye. It's only because it's come together that everyone is so bothered. The fact remains, United can still drop four points and win the title. Liverpool can win all their games, but they will not win the title unless United slip up in at least two games. We still have the advantage.

I Bling Red - the squad doesn't count so much in single games. Liverpool have a first team to rival us, which is why they can beat us over single games. But we have the squad, meaning we can rotate and still win most games. If Torres and Gerrard are out, Liverpool statistically struggle. In the absence of Rooney (or Ronaldo at the beginning of the season) we didn't. If United win the title, the squad will be why. The premier league is about getting the most points from 38 games; NOT winning against the big teams.

Naoise, you miss the point. If United had won against Liverpool (yes I know they didn't, but run with me) they would have been 7 points clear with a game in hand. Now humility or not, there is no question really that that would have been game over for the title race as a contest. Rooney and Ferdinand said nothing wrong (if they perhaps shouldn't have said it) as it is a fact. If Liverpool were in the same position, they'd have said it too. A potential ten point lead is too much to ask.

OK, well if Rooney and Ferdinand said nothing wrong, where, by that logic, is the crime in what Alonso said? We've had to put up with United players giving it the large one every year for twenty years, and one pretty neutral interview from Alonso and you think we're the ones being cocky? I'd laugh, but it's not that funny...
