Evra In Uncharted Territory

It's something new for Patrice Evra: he's never lost two consecutive league games since joining United. But his form dipped alarmingly along with the team's so he can't be that surprised.

"For three years that I have been here, it is the first time that this happens to me, losing two straight matches.

"It is a little accident.'

Well, yes and no. As I said it's the first time he lost two league games in a row - but as for losing two straight matches Evra must have forgotten about April 2007 when we lost at Roma in a midweek Champions League tie and then at Portsmouth on the following Saturday.

The first of those losses were similar to the one at Fulham: Scholes' early sending-off left us little chance but the ten men rallied and put on a real show - yet still lost.

And I'm sure you all remember what the next game was after these two defeats. You don't? It was Manchester United v AS Roma, 10 April 2007. Does it ring some bells now?

First five things, haigh_for_7, very worrying. The last, I honestly wouldn't care. I said at the beginning of the season Ronaldo would need to do a lot to convince me after his disgraceful behaviour in the summer, and he's far from done that. Some of his displays are petulant and he looks like he can't be bothered and doesn't want to be there. We should have sold him last year when we could have got a brilliant price for him, cos I don't think we'll miss him much.

That made me smile - at last, something positive. the last few weeks have just been horrible, and the confidence is just gone. I can't see us doing anything at this rate. But despite all our problems, we are in a terrific position still in all competitions. And another positive - we might miss Vida, Rooney and Scholes against Villa, but at least when they get back from international duty, they have time to recover and be fresh for Porto, and won't be potentially tired by playing sunday-tuesday. It's not all bad.

Everything's totally overhyped. We weren't that good before and we're not that bad now. We have looked worryingly unsure since conceding for a first time in ages against Blackburn, but the attack just needs a goal - when Rooney came on, sometimes in the second half against Fulham we were almost back to our old selves. Liverpool was just a bad day all round; Fulham we were still in shock, and Scholes' red card and the subsequent penalty were the final straw. With eleven men and 0-0 i think we might have won that game. It's been a bad time, but a good win (or just a win will be fine for me, right now) against Aston Villa should hopefully give us a bit of confidence, and see us through to the end of the season.

I liked a lot what Aidy Boothroyd said on Fivelive during the Fulham match - If a team that's going for five trophies (with a good chance of winning most if not all) is in a crisis, it's one a lot of people would like to be in. Everyone's now saying Liverpool have the advantage - not true. They have the momentum, yes, but the advantage is with United, 1 point ahead and with a game in hand. If Fergie had been offered that at the beginning of the season, he'd have taken it, and if Liverpool were offered to swap now, they'd jump at the chance. If United win all their games, they win the title. Liverpool can win all their games, but unless United drop at least four points (and end with a lower goal difference) they still won't win the title.
