Pardew: 'Ruud Made Us Pay'

Hammers boss Alan Pardew had anticipated Van Nistelrooy's return and felt his side largely did a good job at subduing the former PSV Eindhoven star.

After an enterprising opening period, during which Dean Ashton and Marlon Harewood both threatened, the Hammers gradually tired, hardly surprising given the number of games they have played over the past three weeks on their march to the FA Cup semi-finals.

Pardew: 'I thought we dealt with Ruud quite well but, of course, his natural instincts allowed him to take his chance.

'That is the thing you have to be aware of with great strikers and he is world class.'
