A Trophy Is A Trophy!
The Carling Cup is not United's priority and let's face it, it would hardly be a disaster if we lost it. It wouldn't generate a great sense of missed opportunity, we wouldn't look back with regret - even losing a final against Liverpool, in 2003, was not as painful as it would have been in the FA Cup.
But still, holding a trophy aloft is fantastic, something to be cherished. And it's a proper competition, you don't get the trophy after playing one or two games. United have won bigger and better things in the past two seasons (and before that, of course) and are likely to retain their league title - but the Carling Cup's a nice way to whet your appetite.
And our last final appearance in the competition was such a memorable one: United were magnificent that day, brushing aside Wigan with ease and at least did not finish that infamous season trophyless. That was a good day out for the fans, ending with winning a trophy.
And as I said, a trophy's always a great thing. Would I swap it for a win over Inter at Old Trafford? Yeah, probably. But the original point still stands.
