United Beat Another Record On Tuesday
Manchester United now hold the record of the longest unbeaten run in the European Cup. With the 0-0 draw at the San Siro the reigning champions bettered Ajax's and Bayern Munich's 19-game run and to go through we'll have to extend it even further.
There is some statistical confusion here though as Ajax's last game in the 1984/85 European Cup had been a 0-0 draw against Porto and the next time they participated in the competition was in 1994/95, the season they won it unbeaten and started the official record.
If we counted that solitary 0-0 draw in 1985 then Ajax would boast also a 20-game unbeaten run. Apparently, it's discounted because the Amsterdam club participated in other European competitions during their nine-year absence from the European Cup.
We can argue whether that game should be counted or not but a home victory against Inter at Old Trafford would send United through and end any debate about the legitimacy of our record claims.
