3-0 Up And Ronaldo's Sent On, Not Tosic - Why?

OK, we United fans are so spoiled that we even dare to criticise the manager who's taken the club to unprecedented success. I am often baffled by his starting line-ups, the last notable example being the Chelsea game when his decision to leave Carrick out in favour of Giggs made me livid yet he was vindicated by a stellar performance from his most decorated player.

But even in hindsight, yesterday's second substitution does not make sense. After taking Rafael off because of injury, I expected the next change would be Tosic for Giggs or Gibson. After all, Mike Phelan assured everyone that Tosic is ready. But it seems he isn't.

The official website says injuries forced Sir Alex to use different substitution. Well that's rubbish. In the 60th minute we had no injury problems apart from that of Rafael which was already taken care of. United were 3-0 up and cruising so it would have made absolute sense to send on the Serbian winger. Yet Fergie introduced Ronaldo. RONALDO, of all people.

Now I can understand if he did not trust Tosic enough yet, if he thought he was not ready. But why we had to risk Ronaldo in a game that was already won? We've lost four players to injury by the end of the night and Ronaldo could easily have been among them which would be a serious blow, seeing how many key players we are missing already. It was an insane risk.

I just hope we'll see Tosic this season and I hope, very much, that neither of the injuries is serious. I'm especially worried about Evans and Anderson.

any footballer risks injury any game they are played. derby's only option was to push forward being 3 goals down, and what better player to exploit those weaknesses or try to counteract their options. if a team's going to push forward, bringing on someone who is extremely fast, extremely skilful and requires doubling up on a viable solution. it will either exploit a tiring and weak defence or make the opposition think twice about pushing more people forward. ronaldo is also a player that likes to play constantly whether it be against minnows he rarely gets injured considering the number of times he his tackled. other benefits include keeping him fit as well as keep his confidence levels high if he manages to score.
