'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Fergie Content With Whistle-Happy Referee

After Marcos Senna's comments about 'Ronaldo not doing much', it was obvious that Villarreal were going to target Ronaldo. Almost every team do that against us and more often than not the referee is more than willing to support them in kicking him off the park.

Rossetti, referee of yesterday's clash at Villarreal left nothing to chance. He punished every little thing and kept on blowing his whistle throughout. I do not like this style but I must admit that he did his best to stamp out Villarreal's sometimes disgraceful tackling. Capdevila rightly received his marching orders for a knee-high lunge on Ronaldo, a decision which Fergie praised, too.

'The systematic fouling on Ronaldo is what is happening now. It's a tactic. One player fouls him, then another, then someone else. Eventually the referee thinks he's diving all the time. He has got stud marks above his knee. It could have been serious, but fortunately it's not.

'There were three fouls on him which the referee rightly punished, booking the first two players and sending off the third. I think when you see the [Capdevila] tackle again, it's very high and, if you do that, you deserve to be sent off.

'There's a different interpretation of the physical aspect of the game in Europe and I welcome that.'
