A reasonable assessment of our 2008/2009 season so far would tell you that United's best, most consistent player was, without a doubt, Darren Fletcher. Three league goals, plenty of energy, good defensive work. Even his passing improved tremendously.
The news that Owen Hargreaves is out for the rest of the season is not unexpected and though it is definitely bad news for United it could be a blessing for Fletcher. The Scottish midfield always enjoyed Fergie's trust even when nobody believed he would ever be a footballer but it looks like the big man from Govan was right.
And now Fletcher must seize his chance. Scholes is now doing some light jogging, Carrick and Anderson are fit, even Possebon is an option as his talent is obvious, his passing is superb and has great vision. But neither, not even Anderson, can offer the workrate and energy of Hargreaves - Fletcher comes closest to the curly-haired one.
Those who are not blinded by the stuttering form of the early stage of his United career see that Fletcher is now an important and useful part of the squad. Besides, he's a big game player - we played all three of the other members of the top four away from home and got only one point, in the only game Fletcher played in. Of course I don't say it was only down to him but it's worth considering this fact.
So this is his big chance. If he can keep up his form then he can assure himself a place at United for years to come. He must know that he'll be a very important player this season so he must summon all his energy and skill. He's the one who hasn't got the slightest problem with his attitude - the only thing he has to achieve is to remain consistent.
