'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Nani's Language Skills Are Very Important

Is it surprising that a 21-year-old Portuguese footballer does not speak English? Not in the slightest. Is it surprising that as a consequence he finds it difficult to settle into an English team? Again, not in the slightest.

Therefore, it's no surprise that Nani is feeling more comfortable with every day passing as his English is improving.

"I think it is also important for me that my English is getting better,' he said.

'I am trying to learn about my team-mates, to speak and joke with them.'

'I feel that as my English has improved I have become more confident.

'Last season I hardly spoke any English but I am trying now to take part in the jokes."

I very much hope that he's talented in languages; perhaps that will allow him to find some consistency as it's rather infuriating that two excellent performances are usually followed by two abysmal ones in his case.

And his improvement is important as we could lose Ronaldo next season, Giggs is getting older and Park's natural talents are rather limited. Lack of width was a problem this season, and especially when neither Ronaldo nor Nani played or when both were on the pitch but they failed to act as wingers and constantly drifted inside for more action.

So, I hope that Nani's English teacher is up to the job!
