Fergie Turns To Utility Man Mickey Phelan Again

Sir Alex Ferguson has appointed Mickey Phelan as his new assistant manager to replace Carlos Queiroz who took up the national coach's post at Portugal.

The move means that Rene Meulensteen, former technical skills development officer is promoted to first-team coach, the post Phelan has filled since 2001.

'I am delighted that Mick and Rene have agreed to fill these important positions,' Fergie told the official website.

'Mick knows Manchester United inside out, having been associated with the club for the best part of 20 years. He is a very talented and professional coach, whose ability and contribution to the club's success has often been understated.

Understated, yeah. Sir Alex maintains that when he had signed Mickey Phelan he had thought of him as a utility man and as such he served us well.

Others, however, think of him as one of the worst Fergie signings... the truth, as always, is somewhere in between but one's got to feel that once again Phelan got the job for his qualities as a utility man. I wonder if he's the right candidate to replace Queiroz - or just the easiest one.

Damn it, I came so close to getting that post...

In MY opinion, he won't be great but not disgraceful. All though out of who Fergie could have picked, this would have been bottom of my list. Didn't Fergie say he wanted his assistant to speak Portuguese???

No, Paulinho, he said it might be useful, but it wasn't essential. I think Phelan will be okay, he's done well for us in the past. Was disappointed to see Carlos Queiroz go - hopefully he'll come back to us again!
