'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Villarreal, Celtic, Aalborg

The Champions League group stage draw is fairly good: United avoided big guns like Bayern, Juventus or Atletico but were not spared the Battle of Britain hype.

Villarreal were the first to come out: we met them during the ill-fated 2005/06 campaign where they eventually marched to the semis. Two 0-0 draws are unlikely to be played this time.

Celtic, of course, we faced many times, most recently two seasons ago: a 3-2 win at Old Trafford and a dismal 1-0 defeat away wasn't perfect but we won the group.

I'm fairly certain that we've never met Aalborg yet - only other Danish teams. FC Brondby, of course, conceded eleven over two games in '98 while Kobenhavn finished third in the group in 06/07, losing 3-0 at Old Trafford but beating us with an Allback goal in Copenhagen.

Cushy draw or what.

It's a good draw for us, and we won't have to travel far. We should get through with ease, HOWEVER, we've had easy draws before (2005 springs to mind) and mucked them up spectacularly.

Interesting to note, also, that we've now had each of the three teams that humiliated us in the group stage in 2005 (Benfica, 3-1 and 1-0 won in 2006/07 group stage; Lille last 16 2006/07 won 1-0, 1-0; and now Villarreal. As they say, what goes around, comes around.

I'm confident we'll get through. Hopefully as winners of the group!
ForeverUnited
If we don't ForeverUnited, we will have dramatically underperformed. The Champions of Europe simply cannot go out at the group stage with virtually the same team that won just a few months earlier. * Not far to travel, either, which is good for United.
