Fletcher, Our New Goalscoring Sensation!

Fletcher, Our New Goalscoring Sensation!

Only Darren Fletcher managed to score for United this season - unless yesterday night's goal will be taken away from him and recorded as a Distin own goal.

The Scotsman, once the target of vicious abuse from United supporters, is proving his worth now, with two close-range strikes earning four points for United.

'He is great at making those runs,' Sir Alex told Sky after the Portsmouth game.

'He has got fantastic energy and I'm really delighted he's getting the credit he deserves.'

It's a reward for Fergie's patience, really: not many would have kept the faith with Fletcher. Now his skipper is also heaping praise on him.

'Darren was outstanding in pre-season and has carried that form on. It is great that players are posing problems now for the manager when everyone is fit,' Rio Ferdinand said.

'They are putting in performances that demand they are on the bench, if not starting. I am sure the manager will be happy about that.'

Last season was not one of problems but if we have to find some then we can certainly point at the lack of goals from our central midfielders: Scholes, Hargreaves, Anderson, Carrick and Fletcher managed five league goals between them...

Darren's two goals are possibly signs of improvement though I must admit that he played on the right flank against both Newcastle and Portsmouth - therefore our central midfielders, if I want to be strict, haven't scored a goal yet. Oh well, let's hope Fletcher keeps his form up and beats Ronaldo's tally of 42!

Yeah, maybe I'm getting carried away.

I remember you telling us the same after two games last season. Hopefully this time you won't have the linesmen in your pocket at Stamford Bridge.

2 games, 2 goals - seems a little down on last year to me. I know a great striker you could by for only £30 million who would sort that problem out for you.

Um, no, last season, 2 games, 1 goal, 2 points, BringBackHoddle. And yes, this time last year, Chelsea fans were celebrating like they'd won the League. You've got two dodgy games coming up (Spurs, Man City) and you could easily drop points in one of those. And if you were to lose one and draw the other... well, we'd be on the same number of points, with a game in hand. Chelsea fans are saying it's over... it's not even started yet.

And um, Tottenham, I'm just remembering, have how many points? I can't remember them getting any yet? No! Well, that's not very good for a team seeking fourth spot is it??
