It's seems like only yesterday United were lifting the Champions League trophy after a nerve wracking penalty shoot out. But 3 months have passed and it's all to do again now, with Newcastle United providing the first opposition at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson refused to update the media on his moves to acquire Dimitar Berbatov, but did take great pleasure in announcing Wayne Rooney had recovered from his virus fully and was available for selection.

He also responded to comments earlier in the week from Chelsea captain John Terry, who believed United don't have the mentality to improve on last year.

Great news on Rooney. I was worried about how serious this all was, but I knew Rooney would be desperate to be back for the start of the season. Hopefully he'll do really well this season - the past few years have been so stop-start with injuries and so on, he deserves a chance to really prove himself.

Also, I am hopeful about Berbatov, after I watched the interview today with Sir Alex. He seems almost to smile when he says he's not going to talk about it, and he supposedly "doesn't know anything about it." Finally, and I hope I'm not being too optimistic, I believe the deal might be close to going through.
