Really Only One Signing, Fergie?

I'm a bit alarmed by Sir Alex Ferguson's declaration that he's looking to bring in only one player. The gaffer seems reluctant to spend on more players though there are areas which clearly require strengthening. But let's hear what he's got to say first.

'The European Championship derails transfer activity,' he said.

'Nothing really happens while the championships are on. Now it is all over, things will settle down.'

'Managers are back at clubs, back at training and you can get some dialogue now if you are interested in somebody, but I wouldn't think any more than one player.'

And why not?

'People think it is easy to buy players nowadays but it isn't. Money plays a big part and clubs with ambition don't want to sell their best players so it is not as easy as you think. We tend to look for younger ones because of that.'

Still, it does not explain why he wanted to sign only one man. He proceeded to say then that he trusts our veterans, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, to play a key part in next season.

Well, I'm worried about that. I'm not sure if there's much left in them and they certainly should not be counted as key players... But what do I know?

I can only share my opinion which is that we need at least three players. A winger, to replace Ronaldo, a full-back and a striker. These are obvious requirements if we want a successful season and not just a transitional one.

With Giggs and Scholes getting older, one player surely won't be enough to replace the 42 goals of Cristiano Ronaldo. And for the silly money we can get for him, I really think we should bring in a few useful additions.

I'll not be overly worried if not: I endured bleak seasons before and it's better keeping the current squad together than signing Djemba-Djembas. Hell, I even accept if Giggs and Scholes are going to start every game; after all, we've just won the Double, I'm not really hungry for more just yet!

Fergie cant show weakness in his stance on the whole Ronaldo thing, so i suspect this one signign is another cheeky "hands-off" to the guys in Madrid. I fully expect that if ronaldo DOES go, we will get someone, in addtion to this "one signing". As for who that may be, i have a funny feeling it mught be Berbatov. Thew quotes about teams with ambition not wanting to sell their best player fits in with the news that spurs are unwilling to do business in the wake of the carrick transfer and even a blind man can tell that berbatov is one, if not the best player at ther club. Also, i dont think it will be a fullback as in my opinion we have adequate cover, The news from bordeaux boss is that silvestre is going to stay in manchester for his last season, and along with evra and o'shea we have enough at LB. As for RB, the gaffer spoke quite confidently about Neville coming back, and he promised to give the captains armband straight to him, which suggests to me he is in Fergies first xi plans. On top of this we have Brown, who was awesoem last year as well as Danny Simpson who played a handful of games last season (and excelled) and i belive he will be our future RB in years to come. And lets not forget the two brazilain twins comign in - i just think gettign any fullbacks at this time will de-stabilise the development of others, which is why i think we are in for a striker. But, i could be wrong.

Are you stupid? :| no offense, We will only buy 1 player because RONALDO WILL STAY!! if he does somehow leave then ofcourse we will buy more player LOL cant believe you thik we would buy 1 player even if we sell Ronaldo LMFAO, i personnaly think we only need a striker.....someone tall and quality, i would like to see us get Berbatov. dont think we need a full back until Neville retires or Silvest leaves. RB: Neville or Brown LB: Evra or Silvest..........If we bought a full back it would need to be someone cheaper then 10m and someone willing to sit on the bench and buying a full back like that is pointless. THATS why i think Ferguson will wait till Neville retires to buy a full back

Reddevils4ever89 - who exactly is that aimed at? Ceretanly cant be me because if you read my post I have said how I think SAF will get a player IN ADDITION to thwe one already on the cars IF ronaldo was to leave. As for the rest of your post, 100% agree.

Djemba! haha! i wonder how he's doing....probably playing in Man U on his PS3 or the point.. I dont think we should be worried about our fullbacks...we got evra & brown, sylvestre & oshea, and best case scenario, Neville...oh and simpson as well for emergencies...i think they are enough... On the ronaldo thing...i dont know if SAF shows weakness by accepting real's offer, or by letting ronaldo think he is indispensible and a Man U God, who must be protected at all times.... Id still go with our veterans for one more year, but only under the idea that Nani starts and Giggsy is our new "Solksjaer" Cheers

Wellbeck, Manucho, Frazier Campbell, Saha, Tevez, Rooney.....DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER STRIKER? I kno it'll be nice to have another world class striker in the ranks but what happens to the others??

Well Saha will get injured in the warm up before our opening game :| and apart from Tevez and Rooney we dont have a proven/experienced striker, except for MAYBE Manucho who has looked good everytime i seen him play. i still think we need a tall striker, Berbatov would be perfect because he is not only tall but his technique is unbelievably good and he would compliment Rooney/Ronaldo/Tevez/Nani's movement

As it's not a guarantee that Neville will ever get back to the same level, it's important to remember that Rio is 29, and not getting any younger either. Of course; CB's usually have a longer "life-span" than attackers etc.. but I firmly believe that the next defender we sign should be a utility-player like Micah Richards. Richards is young, english, skilled and able to play both RB and CB. He'd be a much better signing than Philip Lahm or Miguel. When it comes to striking options, it's important to find a player who will be able to supply us with an aerial threat. Because right now, with Rooney and Tevez as the only options up front, our attack is one-dimentional and predictable. Berbatov seems the most likely signing, but I'm not impressed with his Anelka-like attitude. LeSulk(2) could be straightened out by Fergie, but I'd rather see a younger, more agile and prolific goalscorer. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is maturing into one of the finest attackers on the planet, scoring goals at an astounding rate. He's the new Ruud, and would be a real scoop for United at anything under 20m. Benzema is also class, and would set the PL alight, but his pricetag is nearing the 30m mark, and that's a bit to expensive in my opinion. And what about this Roman Pavlyucheko from Russia? Or this Falcao-character playing in River Plate? There's planty of opportunities around, I guess we just have to trust Fergie in doing the right thing.

@ForeverUnited: Wellback needs another year, and is likely to get a few games as sub. Manucho is the joker, I don't think anyone knows how close he is to the first team, let alone playing for United. (Remember Dong?) Frazier Campbell will probably be loaned or bought by Hull for this upcoming season, and wouldn't supply us with the kind of qualities United's attack are in need of. Saha is (or at least should be) on his way out. If Bolton actually agrees to pay 8m for him, I'd even pay his cabfare. Talented as we all know, but a huge liability with his constant injury problems. Tevez and Rooney is world class, but they too need some rest. In addition, we could use a smart poacher, preferably with some height and aerial threat. So YES, I DO think we need another world class striker.

You don't really need new players. You've already got a surplus of good players that can perform for many more years. I don't understand why you're linked with Benzema and Berbatov, as you've already got Rooney. Rooney is better than both of them.

Chelsey, your one of the first rival fans ive heard praise Rooney...your 100% right though! As for our current strikign options, i DO think we have a good supply, and i expect Saha to stay - but i still think that we cant disregard the chance to get a tryuly awesome player in Berbatov. We all know players will get injured, and for that reason i think Rooney+Saha+Tevez, plus the wildcard Manucho would be a bit of a risk. As for huntelaar, i just hope we arent seriously interested in him. Hes far too overated IMO.

Though, the funniest story of the last couple of days was the Schweinsteiger rumour. He had ONE good game at the Euros against Portugal and is immediately linked with the best clubs in the world including Manchester and Chelsea. It made me chuckle. Sometimes I like the humour of the tabloids.

chelsey its not a metter of buyin a player better then rooney or tevez, its a matter of buying a striker that is DIFFERENT to tevez and rooney so that we would have more options going forward rather then having only 1 dimension

Chelsey, its the same thing with Arshavin...the guy is 27, he's had a good year with Zenit, against "good" teams, and a superb game against holland. but that's it...and now everyone is going crazy on who;s gonna get him...big deal...its just a bubble that will pop sooner or later... Arshavin is just a normal ok/good player, who will dissappear in a couple of years...not worth paying 15m for him... Reddevils4ever spot on! Thats what we are after...options and unpredictability! Thats why we need to stop looking for ronaldo to make something, IF he stays. If not, we'll get more players in! Benzema for 60EUR???? The french have been drinking wine gone bad, have they?

Schweinsteiger is better than many give him credit. He's inconsistent because he's young and doesn't get enough playing time at Bayern. He's good enough to play at the top in the EPL--the talent is there.
