I'm a bit alarmed by Sir Alex Ferguson's declaration that he's looking to bring in only one player. The gaffer seems reluctant to spend on more players though there are areas which clearly require strengthening. But let's hear what he's got to say first.
'The European Championship derails transfer activity,' he said.
'Nothing really happens while the championships are on. Now it is all over, things will settle down.'
'Managers are back at clubs, back at training and you can get some dialogue now if you are interested in somebody, but I wouldn't think any more than one player.'
And why not?
'People think it is easy to buy players nowadays but it isn't. Money plays a big part and clubs with ambition don't want to sell their best players so it is not as easy as you think. We tend to look for younger ones because of that.'
Still, it does not explain why he wanted to sign only one man. He proceeded to say then that he trusts our veterans, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, to play a key part in next season.
Well, I'm worried about that. I'm not sure if there's much left in them and they certainly should not be counted as key players... But what do I know?
I can only share my opinion which is that we need at least three players. A winger, to replace Ronaldo, a full-back and a striker. These are obvious requirements if we want a successful season and not just a transitional one.
With Giggs and Scholes getting older, one player surely won't be enough to replace the 42 goals of Cristiano Ronaldo. And for the silly money we can get for him, I really think we should bring in a few useful additions.
I'll not be overly worried if not: I endured bleak seasons before and it's better keeping the current squad together than signing Djemba-Djembas. Hell, I even accept if Giggs and Scholes are going to start every game; after all, we've just won the Double, I'm not really hungry for more just yet!
