Carrick Signs On - Great But What About Evra?

Carrick Signs On - Great But What About Evra?

Michael Carrick has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2012.

The Geordie has been one of the most consistent performers of the team over the last two seasons but amazingly, he still gets a lot of stick. He was far from his for about two months after returning to injury but since the end of January, he's been brilliant.

His extension is great news, a further sign that the current team has an excellent backbone. Patrice Evra is part of this backbone, too - yet he still hasn't signed his extension and he's got only one year left to his contract.

The French left-back, easily the best in the world at his position, often stated that he wants to stay at United and he's waiting for the club's offer which still hasn't materialised.

It could be that Evra's representatives have already tabled their demands and the board is mulling over it. I don't know but the fact is that Evra said the ball was in the club's court. It's not that he refuses terms: he's just waiting.

I don't think Evra would have unrealistic expectations: he doesn't strike me as the sort of person who would want 200,000-a-week salary. And I assume that Sir Alex wants him to stay as he's a key man and neither his discipline nor his attitude can be faulted - and his footballing skills I've already mentioned.

Therefore I do not understand why negotiations with him have been delayed while Brown, Ferdinand and Carrick have all received new deals. It is possible that I worry too much but it would be disastrous if Evra felt he's not valued highly enough here. Hopefully the Glazers haven't decided that they should cut the expenses, starting with Evra's wage. It's unlikely but at least an explanation.
