If Anyone Deserves That Record, It's Ryan Giggs

Sir Bobby Charlton revealed he was proud of Ryan Giggs who came on at Wigan to equal his club record of 758 appearances. And Vital United reveals that Giggs deserves it. As if you did not know.

Sir Bobby who has recently lost one game from his stats as research revealed he did not play against Bolton in one particular match is happy for Giggs to overtake him.

"I don`t mind Ryan taking the record," Sir Bobby said.

"If I could choose someone for it to go to, it would be Ryan.

"The day he came to Manchester United I knew he was special. He is a great athlete, a great person and a great footballer. Nobody deserves to break records like he does.

"You need to be here for a length of time to understand this club and the strength of feeling that underpins it.

"His record with Manchester United is unbelievable and I`m really proud of him. I have forgotten about my record already."

If there's anyone who deserves it, it's Ryan Giggs. He did not have a great season, I don't think even he would deny it. But he stepped up when it mattered and held his nerve on the final day to clinch a priceless three points.

His first league title seems so far away: back in 1992/93 he was fighting with Lee Sharpe and Andrei Kanchelskis for a place in the team - and incredibly, he was regarded as a great young talent. As Sharpe's star faded and then Kanchelskis got sold, Giggs became a cornerstone of the team, a key player in Sir Alex's Double winners of 1996.

He was never the model of consistency: brilliant performances were often mixed with turgid ones. But he was always trying to entertain, to score goals, to create, to get you to the edge of your seat.

His greatest title triumphs are the 2000 and the 2007 one, I think. 2000 because he was magnificent in that season, easily his best one. He dazzled everyone with his array of skills and left defenders with twisted blood - to quote another United legend.

And of course last season's success must have been satisfactory for Giggs. He was written off, he was tipped to fade and get only limited opportunities - but instead went on to have a blinder of a season, culminating in the destruction of Roma when he handed out 4 assists. Along with Scholes and Ronaldo, he was United's best player last season.

He faded this season, true. His best moments came as a substitute. But still he got that record on merit - I hope Fergie will have the chance to send him on in Moscow.

Del Piero said he had cried when he had seen Giggs play, Maradona called him his favourite Premiership player and Zidane said he would have never got into the France team had Giggs been born French. That's just about enough for me - no higher praise needed.
