Rio - Carling Cup 'The Catalyst'

Rio - Carling Cup 'The Catalyst'

Forget the taunts of 'picking up the scraps', Rio Ferdinand sees the League Cup as the trophy that can put Manchester United back on track.

The match will put the spotlight back on Wayne Rooney, who was frozen out at Anfield, and Ferdinand laughed off some doubters who say 'stop Rooney and you stop United'.

Ferdinand: 'I don't want to go another season without winning something with United. That would do my head in. The title and the Champions League were the priorities but any trophy will do because it could be the catalyst for us to win some more.

'Wayne is a one-off talent and I will be lucky if I play alongside another footballer as good as him for the rest of my career.

'He can spin a game on its head with one piece of brilliance and it is great to have that in your team. He is definitely one of the best I have played with and he has the potential to be the very best. But he isn't the only talent in our team.'
