United v Roma - Player Ratings!

Edwin van der Sar: A steady performance. Made no mistakes, confident with crosses and long shots as well. 7

Wes Brown: His tackle on Mancini was perfectly timed and clearly took the ball so the penalty is not his fault but the referee's. Otherwise he kept the Brazilian quiet. 7

Gerard Pique: A confident showing. Did his job almost flawlessly and some of his long balls contributed to turning defending into attacking. 7

Rio Ferdinand: Looked to be limping a bit but it was because of a gash on his right foot, Fergie later explained, not because of the injury he picked up at the Riverside. Did his job, kept Vucinic at bay. 7

Mikael Silvestre: A surprisingly assured showing on his competitive return. Looked a bit slow at times but his positioning was excellent. 7

Owen Hargreaves: Man of the match by far. Full of dynamism Enjoyed his more attacking role, ran constantly from box to box and could have scored. His cross to Tevez was the icing on the cake. 9

Michael Carrick: Another brilliant performance. He stole the ball countless times without resorting to bone-crunching challenges. Great distribution. 8

Anderson: The least impressive from our midfield three but he wasn't bad at all. Kept the ball well under pressure and set up numerous attacks by his passes. 7

Ji-sung Park: He's in great form. Harassed the Roma players from the very first minute, chased down every ball, created plenty for the others - pity he missed three great chances to score. 8

Carlos Tevez: Following the insipid performance at Riverside, Tevez had a point to prove but he showed his worth. Constantly on the move, he has drawn defenders out of position and helped us exploit the space thus created. Sealed the progression with a brilliant goal. 8

Ryan Giggs: Well, better than on Sunday. Some good passing but his corners are awful... Good dribbles though.6

Wayne Rooney: Limited impact after replacing Giggs. Two brilliant through balls should have ended in two goals but for the linesman at the first, and Park's poor finish at the second occasion. 6

John O'Shea: Solid in the middle of the park but the contest was already over when he came in. 6

Gary Neville: Relief all round: finally, he's back. He was used as a central midfield for 10 minutes - unusual but it did not matter. I would love to give him a 10 just for the sheer joy his return caused. 6

vidic's injury is a big blow, but silvest and pique can do a good job in centre of defence and with Neville back, we have now got even more options, the defending caos is no more i think, because we have got two good defenders back and pique has shown he is good enough to fill in! funny noone has mentioned arsenals defence caos, i mean playin toure at right back is good for us, because they play senderous in centre and rooney and tevez will rip him and gallas apart, cmon united!!

looking forward to goals from rooney and ronaldo, their back four won't stand a chance without sagna and flamini's not there to protect them. giggs would have deserved a 7

Great to see Silvestre back in the starting eleven, it's so easy to forget how much a player brings to the squad when they are out injured for a long while. Park also brings a lot to the game and I would have had him as man of the match if Hargreaves hadn't put in such a great performance.
